What it is
A narrow limestone inlet about 150 metres deep, cut into the west coast below the village of Agios Leon. The rock forms flat shelves you can lie on and ledges you can get into the water from; there are two mapped sea-cave mouths at the head of the inlet and more around the outside.
The water is the reason to come. It is deep close in and exceptionally clear, because there is no sand to stir up — the same property that makes the west coast poor for paddling makes it the best snorkelling on the island.
A taverna sits on the cliff directly above the water, which is unusual here and does a great deal for the place.
Getting there and getting in
The drive out is fine; the last part is a descent. There is a car park, then roughly 200 metres of walking, then a stepped descent to the water, with about 20 metres of height loss overall. That puts it at access level 3 — materially easier than Korakonisi, materially harder than Porto Roxa four minutes away, where you effectively park at the water.
Once down, you enter off the rock. There is no gradual walk-in anywhere in the inlet.
Snorkelling
Four out of five, and among the best you can reach by car. What you actually see is clean limestone slab and boulder dropping into deep water, wall-following swims along both sides of the inlet, seagrass patches holding fish, and the cave mouths at the head. A dive centre operates here, which is a reasonable proxy for the quality of the water.
The sunset, and the month that matters
The inlet axis measures 256 degrees. The sunset azimuth on Zakynthos swings from about 301° in June to 260° in October — so the sun lines up with the axis of this inlet in October, not in July.
That is the opposite of what most visitors assume, and it explains a common disappointment: people come in midsummer for the photograph they saw and find the sun setting well off to the right of the opening. If the aligned shot is what you want, come in the autumn.
One naming point
“Porto Limnionas” and “Limnionas” are the same place. An island-wide search returns exactly one Limnionas on Zakynthos — this inlet, plus its taverna 90 metres away. The Greek state registers a single bathing water of the name.
You may also see a claim of a second, southern Limnionas further down the coast. No named feature of any kind exists at that location, and this site does not repeat it.

This is why this page gives no jumping advice: without a measured depth, that advice would be a guess about a decision people make from height. A dive operator, or a depth sounding.
- Sea urchins. Often asserted for this coast. Targeted searching in both English and Greek returned no first-hand report for Porto Limnionas — only two locations on the whole island have verified reports. Risk is modelled from substrate: it is limestone, so wear something on your feet. First-hand reports.
