The Best Beaches in Zakynthos
Banana is the most complete beach for the most people: 1,549 m of measured fine sand, a Blue Flag, a lifeguard, level parking and food on the sand. Porto Limnionas is the best scenery-and-snorkelling combination you can reach by car. Tsilivi has the gentlest seabed measured anywhere on the island. Which of the three is right for you depends entirely on whether you want sand, rock, or shallow water for children.

Banana Beach

The most complete beach on the island for the most people: 1,549 m of measured fine golden sand — the longest continuous strip outside Laganas Bay — with a 2026 Blue Flag, a filled lifeguard position, level step-free parking, two beach-bar restaurants on the sand and a KTEL stop. Its 022° NNE aspect puts the prevailing north-westerly off the land rather than onto it.
Against it: No natural shade at all, and it sits outside the Marine Park, which is exactly why the jet skis are here and not at Gerakas five minutes away.
Porto Limnionas

The best scenery-and-snorkelling combination you can reach by car: a 150 m limestone inlet with two mapped sea caves at its head, a taverna on the cliff above the water and a resident dive centre. The inlet axis measures 256°, which aligns with the October sunset to within four degrees.
Against it: There is no sand and no shingle. You climb down steps into deep water. Not a beach day, and not a place for small children.
Gerakas

The only Zakynthos beach where a major protected nesting site, a Blue Flag, a filled lifeguard position, free parking and an easy walk-in all coexist — and the only one fronted by the Glines, clay formations the Marine Park designates a geological monument.
Against it: Strict rules, and they are enforced: 60 umbrellas, 350 visitors, closed at sunset, and you may not bring your own umbrella.
Tsilivi

Wins on a hard number nobody else publishes. The state's bathing-water profile records the seabed still under 5 m at 570 metres offshore — the gentlest gradient measured in this whole dataset. Four filled lifeguard positions, a 2026 Blue Flag, and the best bus service on the island after Laganas.
Against it: Scenically ordinary. It is a very good beach, not a beautiful one, and this site would rather say so.
Alykanas

The calmest measured water on Zakynthos — an open-sea arc of 327–069°, just 103° wide, computed by ray-casting against 55,464 coastline segments — plus completely step-free access, a public shower, a drinking-water tap, a Blue Flag and a lifeguard.
Against it: Under the dominant north-westerly, neighbouring Alykes is marginally calmer. Alykanas's real advantage is shelter from the east.
Marathonisi (Turtle Island)
Access level 5 Nesting beach
Scenic 5/5 on an uninhabited islet with beaches on opposite sides, so one is always in the lee — and the only place in Laganas Bay where an ordinary visitor may stand on a designated nesting beach. It also has the coolest sand of the park's nesting beaches, which gives it the highest proportion of male hatchlings against an island-wide figure of roughly 90% female.
Against it: Boat only, capped at 200 visitors, no umbrellas, and everyone must be off by sunset.
Makris Gialos

The only real snorkelling cove on the entire north-east coast, and the only one there with a dive operation. Measured at 2,862 m² with a 63° open horizon, which makes it sheltered under both the summer maistros and the shoulder-season southerlies — an unusual combination.
Against it: Parking is customer-only rather than public, and there is no swimming platform here; the diving tower people picture is at Cape Skinari, 27 km north.
Porto Zoro

Scenic 5/5 earned honestly: weathered limestone masses standing out of shallow clear water, the only genuine landscape subject on the east coast — and the only beach in its cluster with real natural tree shade.
Against it: No lifeguard, though both its neighbours have one, and a stony seabed that wants water shoes where Banana's fine sand does not.
Limni Keriou

Facilities and accessibility both 5/5: a Blue Flag, a lifeguard, a dozen tavernas, two dive centres and free level parking within 50–150 m. It is the southern gateway to Marathonisi, the Keri Caves and the Mizithres, with mooring rights written into the Marine Park's founding decree.
Against it: A working harbour, so there is constant boat movement. And it is the same place as “Keri Beach” — one shoreline, two names.
Cameo Island
pebble Access level 3
Scenic 5/5, and the best snorkelling within walking distance of Laganas — beginner-level at 2–4 m, calm and clear, with a genuine chance of a loggerhead. Reached by an 88 m footbridge for about €5.
Against it: Thirty-five metres of cove taking major-attraction footfall, 28 unlit rock-cut steps, and it can be closed for a wedding on a summer afternoon.
Where the evidence contradicts the consensus
Navagio is the best beach in Zakynthos.
Navagio is the most spectacular coastal scene in Greece and you may not set foot on it, swim at it, or bring a vessel within 50 m — the fourth consecutive season of an annually renewed prohibition. A best-beaches list that includes a beach nobody may visit is a postcard, not a ranking. It ranks first for scenery, from the viewpoint, and nowhere else. Current status.
The famous sandy beaches are good for snorkelling.
Laganas, Banana, Tsilivi, Alykes, Alykanas, Argassi and Kalamaki — the seven beaches most visitors actually go to — all rate 2 out of 5. A gently shelving sand shelf has no reef, no rock platform, no cave and no relief, and it clouds the moment anyone walks in. If snorkelling is the point of the holiday, the answer is the west coast or a boat from Keri.
Xigia is a great beach.
Xigia is a genuinely interesting swim — cold sulphur-spring water in a limestone cove — but it measures 410 square metres. Its neighbour, confusingly called “Little Xigia”, is nearly seven times larger. The “little” refers to fame, not size. And the water contains no collagen: that is chemically impossible.
A Blue Flag means the beach is supervised.
It does not, and the programme's own text explains why: lifeguards are required only where a beach has been characterised as much-frequented by the competent committee, and elsewhere rescue equipment may replace them. Six of the twelve flagged beaches have no lifeguard. Bouka and Gaidaros fly flags 1.5 km from Tsilivi, which has four.
Laganas is the most heavily regulated beach because of the turtles.
The opposite. Laganas is the busiest nesting-bay beach and the least restricted, because the 1999 decree gives it no land code at all — while Gerakas, Dafni and Kalamaki carry explicit umbrella and visitor caps.
Why the order looks unusual
Most Zakynthos rankings are a popularity list with the famous cove at number one. This one is built from measurements, and measurement rearranges things.
The clearest example is the split between sand and water. The beaches that rank highest for families — Tsilivi, Alykes, Alykanas — are the ones with the shallowest, gentlest seabeds, and those same qualities make them poor for snorkelling. The beaches that rank highest for snorkelling are limestone platforms on the west coast with no sand at all, which makes them close to useless with a toddler. There is no beach on this island that wins both, and a ranking that pretends otherwise is not helping anyone choose.
The second thing measurement changes is access. Reputation is a bad guide here. Gerakas is widely described as a steep cliff descent; the car park sits about 15 m above sea level and the route down is 75 m of asphalt, a boardwalk and one short flight of steps. Meanwhile several beaches that photograph as easy — Plakaki, Little Xigia, Dafni — involve unpaved tracks at gradients an ordinary hire car will not thank you for, and a hire agreement that likely excludes damage off asphalt.
If you only have one beach day
Take the east coast in the afternoon and the west coast in the morning. The wind here roughly doubles between breakfast and six in the evening and comes from the north-west, so the west-coast inlets that are glassy at ten are choppy by five. The east coast is calmer under every wind direction measured — under the dominant north-westerly it runs at less than half the west coast’s wave height.
That single rule will do more for a day at the beach on Zakynthos than any ranking.
Choosing a beach in Zakynthos
The questions that actually decide it.
There is no single answer, and the honest version is that it depends on whether you want sand, rock or shallow water. Banana is the most complete beach for the most people; Porto Limnionas is the best scenery-and-snorkelling combination you can drive to; Tsilivi has the gentlest seabed on the island.
Because you cannot go to it. It has been closed to visitors and swimmers for four consecutive seasons, most recently until 31 October 2026. It ranks first for scenery from the clifftop viewpoint and nowhere else. See the current status.
The east and south-east for sand, shallow water and facilities; the west for clear water, snorkelling and scenery, with no sand at all; the south, in Laganas Bay, for the turtle nesting beaches. The split is unusually clean because the two halves of the island are different rock.
The west coast — Porto Limnionas, Porto Roxa and Korakonisi — and the Keri and Blue Caves, all limestone. Clarity follows the seabed: sand clouds as soon as people walk into it, rock does not.
Mostly yes, but not always for the reason they are famous. Banana genuinely is the island's best all-round sand. Xigia is a memorable swim in a cove the size of a tennis court. Navagio you cannot visit at all.

What we could not establish
- Sunbed prices. Only Cameo Island's roughly €5 admission is both dated and corroborated. Every other figure found was undated or contradicted, so none is published. A dated photograph of a price board, or the municipal concession terms.
- Whether Banana or Laganas is the island's longest beach. Banana measures 1,549 m as a continuous strip; the Laganas polygon measures about 4.2 km but appears to aggregate the whole bay frontage rather than one beach. This site says “longest outside Laganas Bay” until the official beach-limit polygons settle it. The state register's own beach-limit geometry.
