Banana Beach, Zakynthos

What it is like

Fine golden sand, wide, and long enough that the character changes as you walk it. The developed nodes have beach bars, loungers and watersports; the stretches between them are comparatively empty even in August, which is the practical argument for coming here over a cove.

The seabed is soft sand with a gentle gradient — the reason it is so consistently recommended for children — and unlike its neighbour Porto Zoro you do not need water shoes.

It faces about 022°, north-north-east, which puts the prevailing north-westerly off the land. It is a sunrise beach; there is no sea sunset from here.

Facilities

This is the most completely provisioned beach on the peninsula: sunbeds and umbrellas along the developed sections, two beach-bar restaurants on the sand, toilets, showers, and the full watersports menu — parasailing, jet skis, paddleboarding, banana rides, beach volleyball.

A lifeguard is on duty from 1 June to 30 September, and Banana holds a 2026 Blue Flag. It also received one of the four SeaTrac disabled-access units installed across the island in August 2026 — before that month, Zakynthos had none at all.

The watersports are worth one line of explanation. Banana sits outside the National Marine Park, while Gerakas eight minutes away sits inside it. That single fact is why jet skis operate here and not there, and it is the clearest illustration of what the park boundary actually changes.

Getting there and parking

Level, easy, and free. Asphalt runs to the frontage, the car parks sit directly behind the sand at the developed nodes, and there are no significant steps anywhere — access level 1 at the nodes, 2 along the quieter stretches where the walk from a pull-in is longer.

A KTEL bus route serves this coast, which puts Banana among the minority of Zakynthos beaches you can reach without a car. Note that in May and early June no KTEL route runs on a Sunday.

Two things people get wrong

It does not adjoin Agios Nikolaos. Measured from the mapped geometry, their nearest points are 575 metres apart, with the Plaka cove in the gap. They are routinely written about as one continuous beach and they are not.

Ionio is not a separate beach. The state registers a single bathing water, “Ionio-Banana”, covering 1,822 m. Ionio, Ano Vasilikos and Spanzia are all names for sections of this strip.

Snorkelling: don’t

Banana rates 2 out of 5, and so do the other six most-visited sand beaches on the island. A gently shelving sand shelf has no reef, no rock and no relief, and it clouds as soon as people walk into it. If snorkelling matters, the answer is the west coast or a boat from Keri — not this beach, however clear the water looks from the shore.
